Print and file servers
Keep reading to know more about these humble intermediary devices! A print server in computer networking refers to the kind of server used for establishing a connection between printers and computers within the same network.
To put it simply, it is the server with which you access the printer through your computer. Because of these servers, each client computer like yours can start giving printing jobs to the printer and let it access the files within your device. It is not always a physical server. In addition to network devices, a software application or a computer can also act as the print server.
In order to do its job, the first step that needs to be taken is establishing a connection to both the printer and the client computers. To accomplish this objective, all of these devices and software programs need to be in the same network. Now, any of the computers can send a printing job to this connected print server.
The server then receives all these print requests from different computers and forms the queue for the printer. It also has the responsibility of directing each job to the specified printer, if there are multiple printers available in the network.
Along with queueing the jobs locally, the server can reorder them or delete a few from the queue if necessary. So it supervises the overall management of the queued jobs. There are several ways you can establish the connection between a print server and a printer.
The servers are built with one or more ports so that if one connection becomes unavailable, you can rely on the next one to continue working with the printer. Printing is not a huge performance hit and neither is file sharing. If your server cannot do these things simultaneously then you need a new server. As it was mentioned the issue comes down to drivers.
I have never allowed these vendors' nasty drivers on production servers. Use only signed drivers from Microsoft. If your printer is not listed, simply find out what emulation it uses and load that driver instead.
If there is no supported emulation use a driver that is close and uses the same printer language instead. You have to take everything you read with a grain of salt. I have found over the years that nothing works quite as advertised and all things have gotchas.
At this location I have two virtual servers, one is a DC which hosts user shares and roaming profiles and print services. The other is nothing but Exchange. I also have a physical server that is dedicated to Quickbooks hosting and SQL. I have three additional servers for development testing and platforms to be used in emergency or migration situations, but not license burning business critical units.
So in this example I have spread the roles across the three that count and the performance is awesome. Print services are the smallest of my concerns performance wise. This is useful in overcoming cable length issues when dealing with old school lpt or usb ports.
You can then deploy several old school non tcpip printers in a location other than near the server. Tcp based printing of course this does not matter, but you could still use a Linux based print server without burning a server license, but why maintain an extra box for nothing. Paddy mentioned this, but I'll emphasize it. At my last job, I worked for a small company of about people with a ton of data that was only growing. We had to expand the storage on the File server which also acted at the Print server.
One thing led to another and the File server was down during the day. On top of users not being able to get their files, they couldn't print anything either. Additional Info : Item Dimensions Height 3.
