Piston pin circlip installation
This is the super easy way, only 8 bucks. In theory, at high rpm, if the gap is at 9 or 3 o'clock, the gap could close and the clip come out. Don't need to get them at the high price from slavens. Very thick and I also launched one of them while trying to install it. It flew out, hit the ceiling, and landed on the top of a paint can right behind me. Now I have installed clips dozens of times over the years and have never had this kind of trouble. Thinking I was getting rusty I pulled an old YZ piston off the shelf and sure enough the pins were about half the diameter of the Vertex clips.
So needless to say, EZ clips will be used on the next rebuild. They are just regular C-clips. The bag they came in did not have the KTM logo or part number though.
Perhaps Slavens bought all the remaining stock and KTM is now selling alternates? If anyone finds the EZ clips cheap somewhere, let us know please. PM me too, because I'll probably never see this thread again. Half way in, cover with your finger, screw driver handle to work it in so you don't scratch the piston.
Yeah they can suck. What a brilliant piece of kit. Few seconds a side and no need even for a rag over the crankcase -. Discussion in ' Chainsaws ' started by SteveSr , Dec 7, Log in or Sign up. Outdoor Power Equipment Forum. Hello, I'm stumped and could use a little creativity or prior knowledge here.
I am trying to install a new piston as shown in the attached photos. So far after messing with it and a pair of jewelers screwdrivers for about 45 minutes and chasing the clip around the garage floor a couple of times I am no closer to getting it installed.
The only good news is that I still have both the new and old clips! I am beginning to learn why Stihl has a special tool for this Tried some small sockets as pushers but the one that fits inside the pin bore allows the clip to ride up and over it while the next one up won't push the clip into the bore. What am I missing? Thanks, Steve. SteveSr , Dec 7, I use a tuning screw driver with the small notch ground in the end of it. I checked some untouched used pistons and rods and those circlips are flat side in. They are original Ford. The rounded side of the clip isn't as obvious as the clips in my old trw s. The s that were in my were in there 20 years with no problems till a valve seat came loose. Those clips were installed with the round side in like it says in"how to rebuild your big block ford" I have some extra pistons, but would like to buy new circlips.
Anyone know where to get them? Am I looking for trouble if I change the direction of the clips in my used s? Thanks Tom. I have always installed Tru Arc clips with the rounded side in, against the wrist pin, so the flat side had a wider surface area to seat against the pin boss of the pistons. The rounded side would be more likely be subject to working out instead of, at least on a 'micro' basis, digging in.
My own choice has been 'Spiro Locks'used two to each end. H 2 H said:. The clips were the Springiest Clips I've ever installed. I wouldn't expect these Meteor clips to fail. This isn't to say the clips you received with your piston are the same as mine. Jacob J. Tree Freak. Joined Aug 26, Messages 17, Location Oregon.
Well, forget about saw parts failure. My first try it launched to parts unknown, so I got the next one in, but the wrong side of the piston. When I took it out, it launched. So now I'm going to take the saw to the dealer and let him put the piston on. The Meteor topend I tested Saturday had earless clips. ZeroJunk Addicted to ArboristSite. Not sure what you mean by wrong side of the piston?
I have lots of experience assembling auto engine, saws are new to me. I have always put the clip in the opposite side from where I want to push the pin in.
There's more room to work on the flywheel side so I put the clip in the clutch side first then put the piston and pin on the rod. Mine also. ZeroJunk said:.
